The surrealist technique that I chose is collage. Collage is a peice created by combining different types of media surrounding a subject. So I based my collage on drawing.:) (my own drawing is somewhere in there:P)

James Timothy Gleeson was Australia’s foremost surrealist artist, a poet, critic, writer and curator, born in Sydney. Growing up he was fond of other surrealist like Salvador Dali.He studied at a teacher’s college for two years and attended the Contemporary Art Society. He was influenced to create surreal paintings because he was always interested in writings of psychologists like Sigmund Freud. During the 60′s he moved to a more symbolic perspective in art exploring human body. He’d paint a background and add a male naked (expressing his homosexuality). Slowly, he started expressing body parts in his paintings with just an eye or an arm. When I saw his painting, my mouth dropped open. They were so out of the ordinary and most of them were gross. Its just random body parts and backgrounds and I have no clue how he puts together such pieces. His paintings got me wondering where he gets such an inspiration? I draw too, but I’ve never thought of such an image! Even if this all began with him being interested in psychologists, I really think it takes mere talent and a great mind to think of something out of the box.

Rules when writing

I saw this picture on google while I was looking for something else and the first thing I thought was, I have to put this on my blog ! I always thought there really wasn’t any rules as to how someone writes. In my dicitonary writing is one of the many ways to express inner feelings. And expressing something shouldn’t have rules or boundaries right? This picture just got me thinking:P

Sonnet

A type of poetry is sonnets, which is said to be lyrical. Sonnets is a poem of fourteen lines that follows a strict rhyme scheme and specific structure. One of the best sonneteers (sonnet writers) was William Shakespeare who wrote over 154 sonnets. Sonnets contain ten syllables with a pattern of an unemphasized syllable and than a emphasized syllable. (Ex: a-b-a-b) This is repeated 5 times and the last two lines rhyme. Sounds extremly hard to keep track of ! Most sonnets are arranged as three quatrains (stanzas of four lines) followed by a couplet (a two-lined stanza). The theme of most sonnets was love–romantic, passionate, or unrequited love (not a surprise). This is an example of the Shakespearean sonnet form:

So oft have I invoked thee for my Muse, (A)
And found such faire assistance in my verse, (B)
As every Alien pen hath got my use, (A)
And under thee their poesy disperse. (B)
Thine eyes, that taught the dumb on high to sing, (C)
And heavy ignorance aloft to flie, (D)

Jay Millar

Jay Millar is a Toronto poet, editor, publisher, and virtual bookseller. The book I had picked up in class is called Double Helix, which is a collaborative “novel” written with Stephen Cain. The title it self caught my attention and after skimming through the book, I decided to go back and read couple of the peoms fully. While skimming through the books, the words and lines slowly grasped my attention. Than the titles made me want to read the poems properly. Titles like Embraces, Erotica and Silhouette. Double Helix is a book where the authors read and write peices through the alphabet and discuss everything from literature to the weather. This was inspired by DNAs, “Molecular strands of concepts, arguments, and narratives twist about each other, yet also match, much like the double helix of human DNA. ” Currently Jay teaches creative writing at George Brown College (wow! Do some writers teach at universities/colleges like my novel study book author, Michael Ondaatje). While looking through the book, the line that I loved is ” Most people dislike those I love, I love intensly”. I felt like that line had a connection with me and i liked it. Drawing

Drawing is a visual art that is created by any kind of utensil such as pencil, marker, paint, charcoal, crayon, color pencil, and pen. The material released onto the support such as paper, cardboard, etc, can be visible depending on the pressure applied. Drawing is a way of expressing ones feelings visually, through colors and lines. I realized while investigating that we tend to forget where drawing started from. As shown on movies and learned through history, it orginated from cave men who drew on rocks and called it cave drawings. Back than it was lines and shapes drawn with rocks or leaves. Now drawings look so real-life with shadings, lines, tones, and other techniques. I also noticed the different types of drawings that people use to express emotions. There’s abstract drawing, which I myself love doing because I find it the best way to convey your feelings. The colors and different shapes are the best way to show exactly how u feel in my opinion. Than there is portraits of people, which is a good way of remembering someones face. There is also sculptures, that are the greatest way of showing the artists’ ideas. Something that I love about drawing is how the end result looks like when you’re finished. Everytime I draw, I imagine one thing when I start and it ends up way better than I thought. Another thing I like about art and drawing is how everyones perspective is different. If you put two people near a beach and told them to express what they see in any way of art, both of their work would be different. One might show it in abstract while another might draw cartoons. They way one looks at everday things could be represented with art. What I learned about drawing is that it first began with cave men, egyptian, greek and than romans. Another thing I learned is, almost any surface/utensil can be used for drawing, a line can be considered drawing, drawing orginated 35, 000 years ago (that’s very very very old!!), and Michelangelo(painter) was seven years old when he first made a figure with a hammer. Something that I always wondered is how artists seem to get amazing inspirations and create such beautiful works. Are they like me, walking down the street and seeing something pretty and remembering it next time I draw? Or do they sit and think about something and draw that? I think, if you put your mind towards what you’re making or creating, you can surprise yourself.

Breaking the Sound Barrier

Basically what the term “breaking the sound barrier” means is when a jet is flying at a very high speed or the speed of sound, the tip of the jet breaks the sound barrier and the clouds form a shape. The clouds around it are vapour clouds and they tend to make egg like shapes or a funnel. It also creates a big explosion or sonic boom when it passes through the sound barrier and they say that if you’re on the ground you can actually hear it. I thought this was really cool because people actually captured this happening and god knows how fast the jets go. What I really wanted to hear perosonally was the actual sonic boom itself. It would be really nice to hear it happen and I wanted to know how loud it sounds when the sound barrier is broken. Would it be loud enough to hurt your ears and just a quick boom? I also wanted to know how it would look if I saw it with my own eyes, rather than through a video. After seeing the video I really wanted to see it and hear it myself, but I think it would be too fast to catch a glimpse.

Airwaves

Many of these artist that I heard create music that is pretty much different from everyday music. They use their vocals to perform in live performances or in theatrical. When I heard Jana Haimsohn’s Hav’a Lava Flow, I first thought that it was some kind of alien music or techno music. It sounded so cool and different from the other types of music. It was clear that she was using her mouth to create those sounds, but I only realized that later on in the song when she changed the tune and the sounds to make it sound way different. Julia Heyward also used her lips to start of the song with “la la”, and it was pretty cool how she was able to maintain that sam pitch and breath control. These artists are influenced by what they see or observation, and they never repeated themselves. What I think makes these artists totally different from other type of artists, is that the music they make from their mouths isn’t supposed to make much sense. It tries to gie out a feeling and rhythm that should be self-explanatory. The sounds that Julia was making was very familiar to the exercises we did in class, where we just make random noises. But Julia was probably prepared with the type of sound she was making and the tune and everything, so that it would give off the meaning she wanted. One thing that makes them similar to other artists, is that their music itself makes everyone want to get up and dance. I got to admit I began moving around after listening to Hav’a Lava Flow. To me no matter what type of music is created, it should always be able to make everyone get up and dance.
